Pipetteboi

What are they and why do we use them? What types are there?

The pipetteboi/pipetteboy is an automated serological pipette that allows you to quickly and easily move volumes of liquid that exceed 1 ml. They tend to be pretty standardised, remaining the same while variation in volume is based upon the long tip that is inserted into the end.

When do you use?

Whenever you need to accurately move a volume that is more than 2 ml. Anything less than 2 ml and you may as well just use a micropipette.

How do you use?

You will need sterile, plastic wrapped long pipette tips for use of the pipetteboi. These tend to come in 5 ml, 15 ml and 50 ml varieties. Unwrap the end of the plastic to expose just the nipple of the pipette tip. Stick this firmly into the socket of the pipetteboi. Dip the end of the pipette tip into the liquid you wish to collect and press the top button to draw it up. Use the graduations on the pipette to observe the volume collected - these tips have numbers counting upwards and downwards. Once satisfied with the volume, move the tip to the destination vessel and press the bottom button to release all of the liquid.

Be careful not to overload the pipetteboi, sucking liquid up into the machine itself will soak the internal filter which will quickly need replacing if exposed to such treatment.
